Breaklines for hydrographic features are digitized using the intensity values of the lidar data. The hydrographic features, include water bodies (> 1 Acre) and wide rivers (> 25ft wide). Elevation values from the lidar data are conflated to the “z-values” of the features at 3ft intervals using QCoherent’s LP360 software. Elevation values are conflated to a wideriver centerline at 3ft intervals with a downstream constraint algorithm. These elevation values are copied to the vertices of the wideriver polygon to flatten the wide river from stream bank to stream bank. Elevation values for the water body polygons are added to the vertices and as an attribute to the feature class based on the minimum lidar elevation value along the shoreline of the water body. The lidar ground points within a 2 ft buffer of waterbody and wideriver polygons are removed from the terrain surface. Breaklines are also created to eliminate bridge saddles. The remaining lidar ground points and breakline feature classes are used to create a DEM with 3ft cell resolution. The contours are created from the DEM. The contours are edited in the following manner: Lines shorter than 18ft (2 raster cells) are deleted. The contour lines are smoothed using a PAEK algorithm with a 3m smoothing tolerance. Attributes are added for 10ft, 20ft, and 50ft Index contours. The following topology rules are checked and edited: Lines Must Not Overlap, Lines Must Not Have Dangles, and Lines Must Not Self Intersect. A hillshade is created of the DEM using default ESRI illumination parameters. And a terrain dataset is created of the lidar groundpoints and breakline features classes as well.
